Genesis 7 A Flood of Skepticism
The account of Noah and the flood is one of the most widely known passages in the entire Old Testament. It is also one of the most maligned.
Skeptics point to the fact that it would have been impossible to put all of the animals on ark. How would they have ever come to the ark? How could giraffes and Elephants have fit on the ark? How could Noah have tended to them? How could he have possibly fed them all and picked up after them? How could water have completely flooded the entire earth?
These questions may seem difficult for the person who rejects the Bible. However, in the context of Genesis 1-6 it is not difficult to accept the flood account of Genesis 7.
God is the One who created the heavens and the earth out of nothing. He created all of the plants and shrubs. He created all of the animals and birds, and He formed mankind out of dust of the ground. If God exists, and He does, it is a rather simple thing for Him to flood the earth he made of out nothing.
Colossians 1:16-16 says “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Apart from God, nothing would hold together. If He is able to hold all things together, He is certainly able to send rain great enough to flood the earth.
Rejection of the flood is not merely an issue of science. More likely it is the result of the skeptic’s rejection of God and Bible.
The flood indeed took place as, “All the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened” (Gen 7:11). Noah and his family entered the ark (7:13); all the other beasts, creeping things, and birds entered (7:14-16); the flood waters came upon the earth for forty days and forty nights (7:17-19) so that the highest mountains were covered (7:20); the flesh on the earth and the birds of the skies perished (7:21-22).
Genesis 7:23 provides a bookend for what was said in Genesi 6:7. In the earlier verse God had promised to “Blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky.”
Genesis 7:23 fulfills that promise word for word.
The Lord is able to do all that He promises to do. He blesses just as He says He will bless, and He judges just as He promises to judge.
Do you need some encouragement today? Perhaps you are in a situation that seems as if there is no hope to overcome. You could be in the midst of a great sickness, a financial problem or a relationship issue. Perhaps you are addicted to some drug or activity that will not seem to let you go.
Know that the God who promised that He would flood the earth fulfilled that promise just as He says He would. He has power that surpasses our understanding. He alone is in control of all things.
In addition, He was able to save Noah from the wickedness of his day. He knew of Noah’s righteousness and desire to walk with Him.
As we read this account we realize that there is nothing God cannot do. Your situation is in his hands. He knows all about it.
Pray to Him. Ask Him to help you. Trust in Jesus, His Son as your Savior. No matter what your situation might be today, God can give you grace in your time of need. Be encouraged in the Lord in this day.
